作品と一体化するとは
このブログでは文学と一体化する方法と銘打って、作品鑑賞の手法を紹介しています。
そもそもそのアイデアはどこから来ているのか。
きょうはそれを紹介します。
映画で桐島、部活やめるってよという作品があります。
このなかで、終盤次のようなシーンがあります。
高校生の部活で映画を撮る神木隆之介に対し、 東出昌大が質問します。
なぜ映画を撮るのか。将来映画監督になるため？ 女優と結婚するため？ アカデミー賞をとるため？
それに対して神木隆之介は映画監督になるのは無理、と答えます。
ではなぜ苦労してわざわざ映画を撮るのか。
ときどき、おれたちが好きな映画と、自分たちが撮った映画が、つながってるような気がして、それがなんかこう…（いいんだよね、という感じで笑う）
これが作品と一体化するということですね。
映画、文学、あるいは絵画や音楽などもそうですが、何かを表現する創作に関っていると、何か大きなものとつながっているような、神々しい体験することがあると思います。
かつての宗教が担っていたような役割かもしれません。
イメージでいうと、光が見えるとか、一緒にやっているメンバーと一体化しているとか、観客と同一になっているとか。
このブログでは、筆写を中心に、そういった文学鑑賞の技法を伝えて行きます。
書くための技法
作品と一体化するため、ノートに書くのも重要です。

モルグ街８日目
Had the routine of our life at this place been known to the world, we should have been regarded as madmen — although, perhaps, as madmen of a harmless nature.
ここでの我々の日常生活が世間に知れたなら、我々は狂人と――もっともたぶん、害のない狂人と――思われたにちがいない。
Had は仮定法で倒置されています。If the routine had been knwon... というのが元々の形ですね。日常生活が世間に知れたなら、いやでも知られることはないだろう、という意味が含まれています。

Our seclusion was perfect. We admitted no visitors.
我々の
隠遁 は完全なものであった。訪問者は一人もよせつけなかった。
seclusion 隠遁。seclude 隠遁する、です。
no visitors 訪問者は一人も〜ない。noがつくと全くない、という意味になります。
Indeed the locality of our retirement had been carefully kept a secret from my own former associates;
実際、我々の隠れ家は私の以前の仲間たちには注意深く秘密にしておいたし、
locality 位置、場所。
retirement 隠遁。
associate 知り合い
and it had been many years since Dupin had ceased to know or be known in Paris. We existed within ourselves alone.
デュパンがパリで世間と交渉を絶ってからよほど年がたっていた。我々はただ二人だけで暮していた。

dawn 夜明け。daybreak も日の出の意味の同義語ですね。
massy =massiveで重い、どっしりした

perfume 香りづけるという動詞ですね。名詞だと香水です。
throw out （香りを）放つ。perfumeと同格で並列されている動詞です。

aid 助け。by the aid of 〜の助けを借りて
busy この場合は忙しくする、という動詞です。私たちの心を忙しくする、夢の中で。

主人公「わたし」とデュパンの奇妙な生活が描写されていきますね。
いったいこの後はどう展開していくのでしょう。気になります。
男ふたりの会話、というのは現代のBL（ボーイズラブ）にも通じるところがありそうです。
グレートギャツビーや江戸川乱歩の探偵小説でも、男二人が語り合うシーンが多くでてきます。
同じ１９世紀末生まれの人たちの書く小説の共通点といえそうです。
文体や雰囲気も、どことなく似ていると思いませんか。引き続きモルグ街の魅力を伝えていきます。
江戸川乱歩「D坂の殺人事件」
少し脇道にそれますが、ポーをたいへん敬愛していた日本人作家に江戸川乱歩がいます。
モルグ街の殺人事件が世界最初の探偵小説とすれば、江戸川乱歩のD坂の殺人事件もまた日本における探偵小説の記念碑的作品でしょう。
D坂の事件ではポーのモルグ街の殺人事件も少し紹介されています。
乱歩がポーを尊敬していたことがよく伝わってきますね。
主人公の語り手が共に「わたし」であり、相棒のデュパン、明智小五郎がそれぞれ事件の推理をする点も共通しています。

近年だと2016年にNHKで、満島ひかりが女性ながら明智小五郎を演じて話題になりましたね。
オーディオブックも順次紹介していきます。
文学は一つの作品から、派生していくのが楽しいですね。きりがないくらい広がります。
モルグ街７日目
Residing in Paris during the spring and part of the summer of 18 — I there became acquainted with a Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin.
一八――年の春から夏にかけてパリに住んでいたとき、私はＣ・オーギュスト・デュパン氏という人と知合いになった。
reside 居住する リザイド、と発音します。マンションなどでresidence レジデンスという言葉をよく聞きますね。これの動詞形です。
be acquainted with 誰々と知り合いになる。acquaintance 知り合い、です。
This young gentleman was of an excellent — indeed of an illustrious family, but, by a variety of untoward events, had been reduced to such poverty that the energy of his character succumbed beneath it, and he ceased to bestir himself in the world, or to care for the retrieval of his fortunes.
この若い紳士は良家の――実際に名家の出であったがいろいろ不運な出来事のために貧乏になり、そのために気力もくじけて、世間に出て活動したり、財産を
挽回 しようとする元気もなくしてしまった。
be of 名詞 名詞の特徴を持つ、性質を持つなどと訳されるofの使い方です。日本人が自分で使うことはなかなか難しいですね。
illustrious family かなりの家柄、となります。

fortunes 財産と訳されていますが、複数形なので家運、人生の浮き沈みといった意味かもしれません。

それでも、債権者たちの好意で、親ゆずりの財産の残りがまだ少しあったので、

creditor 債権者。会計用語では貸方です。借方はdebtor
patrimony 世襲財産
there still remained は倒置だと思うといいです。本来の主語はa small remnantで、remnant remained thereのような文だと思うとわかりやすいですね。
and, upon the income arising from this, he managed, by means of a rigorous economy, to procure the necessaries of life, without troubling himself about its superfluities.
それから上がる収入でひどい節約をしながらどうかこうか生活の必需品を手に入れ、余分なもののことなど思いもしなかった。
rigorous 生活などが厳しい。economyはこの場合経済ではなく節約というニュアンスです。
procure 手に入れる
Books, indeed, were his sole luxuries, and in Paris these are easily obtained.
唯一の
贅沢 といえは、実に書物だけで、これはパリでたやすく手に入った。

稀覯書というのは古風で面白い訳語ですね。the rare and remarkable volume、volumeはこの場合書物のことです。100 volumes だと１００冊の本、になります。
余談ですが覯という字は難しいですね。思いがけなく会うという意味です。古風な英語に対してそれに見合う日本語訳を見つけるのが翻訳家の役割なのですね。
I was deeply interested in the little family history which he detailed to me with all that candor which a Frenchman indulges whenever mere self is the theme.
フランス人が自分のことを語るときにはいつも示すあの率直さで、彼が、詳しく話してくれた彼一家の小歴史は、非常に面白かった。

astonish 驚かせる be astonished で驚く、です。be surprisedと同じです。
enkindle 燃え立たせる。kindleだけでも燃え立たせるという意味です。アマゾンのあのキンドルはここからきていますね。
fervor 熱情
Seeking in Paris the objects I then sought, I felt that the society of such a man would be to me a treasure beyond price; and this feeling I frankly confided to him.
そのころ、私は求めるものがあってパリで捜していた。で、こういう人と交わることはなににもまさる宝であろうと思い、この気持をはっきり彼にうち明けた。
society 社交、人と交わること。社会の意味ではないですね。
beyond price なにものにもまさる宝
confide 打ち明ける。confess も似たような意味で告白する、の意です。
It was at length arranged that we should live together during my stay in the city;
で、とうとう私のパリ滞在中は、一緒に住もうということになった。
at length ついに。at lastと同じですがlengthのほうが文語的な表現です。
and as my worldly circumstances were somewhat less embarrassed than his own, I was permitted to be at the expense of renting, and furnishing in a style which suited the rather fantastic gloom of our common temper, a time-eaten and grotesque mansion, long deserted through superstitions into which we did not inquire, and tottering to its fall in a retired and desolate portion of the Faubourg St. Germain.

こうして「わたし」とデュパンは一緒に住まうことになりましたね。
ここまできて余談ですが、この作品の男性二人コンビというのは、のちの作品にも影響を与えているようです。
フィッツジェラルド『グレート・ギャツビー』も語り手は私で、ギャツビーが相棒となって物語が進行していきます。
ギャツビーは主人公ニックの隣の豪邸に住んでいましたね。あれもmansionです。
またグレートギャツビーに影響を受けた作品で、『ファイトクラブ』があります。
著者のチャック・パラニュークはフィッツジェラルドを敬愛しているそうです。
映画版だとわかりやすいですが、あの作品でも主人公はわたし（エドワード・ノートン）で、相棒はブラッド・ピットでしたね。
二人は飛行機で「出会って」以来仲良くなり、ついには郊外の廃屋同然の屋敷で一緒に住むことになります。
こうしてみると、アメリカには連綿と男性二人コンビという文学作品の型があるのかもしれません。
モルグ街６
The analytical power should not be confounded with simple ingenuity; for while the analyst is necessarily ingenious, the ingenious man often remarkably incapable of analysis.
分析力と、単なる工夫力とを、混同してはならない。なぜなら、分析家は工夫がうまいと決っているが、工夫のうまい人でも恐ろしく分析力のない人がときどきあるからである。
confound 混同する
ingenuity 創意工夫。inbenious 工夫のうまい
incapable of analysis 分析ができない、分析力のない、となります。
The constructive or combining power, by which ingenuity is usually manifested, and which the phrenologists (I believe erroneously) have assigned a separate organ,この工夫力が普通あらわれるのは、構成力とか結合力によってであって、骨相学者たちはこの力を本源的能力と想像して別の器官をこれに割当てている（これは誤っていると私は信ずる）のであるが、

工夫力と分析力のあいだには、非常によく似通った性質のものではあるが、空想と想像のあいだの相違よりも、実にもっと大きな相違があるのである。

imaginative 想像力に富む。imaginary 想像上の。この２つの違いは重要です。間違えないように！
The narrative which follows will appear to the reader somewhat in the light of a commentary upon the propositions just advanced.
これから語す物語は、いままで語った命題の注釈のように、読者諸君には見えるであろう。
which follow このあとに続く◯◯は・・・という関係代名詞です。The narrativeを受けてfollowsと、三単現のsがついていますね。

just advanced いまさっき語った。which is just advanced の省略版と考えるとわかりやすいですね。
ここまでで、ようやく物語の序文のようなものが終わります。

Whist has long been noted for its influence upon what is termed the calculating power; and men of the highest order of intellect have been known to take an apparently unaccountable delight in it, while eschewing chess as frivolous.
ホイストは、いわゆる計算力を養うものとして早くから知られていて、最高級の知力を持つ人々はチェスをつまらないものとけなして、ちょっと不思議なほどホイストに凝ったものだ。

Beyond doubt there is nothing of a similar nature so greatly tasking the faculty of analysis. The best chess-player in Christendom may be little more than the best player of chess; but proficiency in whist implies capacity for success in all these more important undertakings where mind struggles with mind.

上手 ということになると、心と心とがたたかうすべての、もっと重大な事業にも成功できるということを意味する。キリスト教国中で一番のチェスの名人だといっても、つまりはただチェスの名人だというにすぎない。

natureはこの場合性質の意味です。
mind struggles with mind 心と心がたたかう、という表現は面白いですね。推理小説における探偵と犯人との戦いもこのようなイメージがあります。
When I say proficiency, I mean that perfection in the game which includes a comprehension of all the sources whence legitimate advantage may be derived.
この上手というのは、正当な利益をもたらすすべてのつぼを、それぞれちゃんと知り抜いているといった、
技 の完全な精通を意味するのである。
comprehension 理解、comprehend理解する、comprehensive 包括的な、理解可能な と派生します。理解する＝包み込むイメージです。
whenceは from whereの古い言い回しです。
These are not only manifold but multiform, and lie frequently among recesses of thought altogether inaccessible to the ordinary understanding.
これらのつぼは多種多様で、しかも多くの場合、普通の理解力ではぜんぜん近づきがたい思考の奥深くに隠れているのだ。
manifold 多数の
recessees 奥まったところ。常に複数形でesがつきます。recess後退する、recession（景気の）後退
To observe attentively is to remember distinctly; and, so far, the concentrative chess-player will do very well at whist; while the rules of Hoyle (themselves based upon the mere mechanism of the game) are sufficiently and generally comprehensible.
注意深く観察するということは明瞭に記憶することであって、そこまでなら集中力の優れたチェスの棋客もホイストを十分うまくやるだろうし、またホイルの法則だって（それがゲームの単なるメカニズムに基づいたものである以上）誰にでも十分に理解できるものなのだ。
so far そこまでは。so far, so goodそこまではよい、などよく使います。
concentrative 集中力の優れた、concentrated effort 集中した努力のように使います。concentration集中、 concentrate集中する、です。
Thus to have a retentive memory, and to proceed by “the book,” are points commonly regarded as the sum total of good playing.
だから、よい記憶で、「方式」どおりにやるということが、うまく勝負をする
秘訣 だと一般に考えられている点である。

ところが、分析家の腕の見せどころは、単なる法則の限界を越えたところにあるのだ。彼は黙っていながら多くの観察や推理をする。

inference 推論、推理 この作品のキーワードですね。
So, perhaps, do his companions; and the difference in the extent of the information obtained, lies not so much in the validity of the inference as in the quality of the observation.
また、たぶん彼の仲間もそうする。それで、そうして得られた知識の範囲の違いは、推理の正しさよりも観察の質にあるのだ。
最初の文はSo do I 私も〜する、と同じ構文ですね。
次の文も受験英語でよく出てくる構文です。
まずthe difference lies in A という表現。違いはAにある、という構造があります。
そこにnot so much A as B、 AでなくBに〜がある という構文が組み合わさっていますね。
validity 正しさ。validは 正しい、です。
The necessary knowledge is that of what to observe. Our player confines himself not at all; nor, because the game is the object, does he reject deductions from things external to the game.
必要な知識は、なにを観察すべきかを知ることなのである。わが分析的競技者は決して自分だけの中に閉じこもることをしないし、またゲームが目的だからといって、ゲーム以外のものごとからの推定を拒んだりはしない。
deduction 推定。ちなみにdecution 演繹 ↔︎ induction 帰納 です。
He examines the countenance of his partner, comparing it carefully with that of each of his opponents.
彼はまず味方の顔つきをよく見てから、それを敵方の一人一人の顔つきと念入りに比較する。
He considers the mode of assorting the cards in each hand; often counting trump by trump, and honor by honor, through the glances bestowed by their holders upon each.
一人一人の手にある
骨牌 の揃 え方を考え、ときどき持主が一枚一枚を眺める眼つきから、一つ一つの切札や絵札を数える。
honor は名誉と訳すことが多いですが、ここではトランプの絵札のことです。
trump もただのトランプではなく、切り札のことですね。
He notes every variation of face as the play progresses, gathering a fund of thought from the differences in the expression of certainty, of surprise, of triumph, or chagrin.
彼は競技の進行中ずっと、顔のあらゆる変化に注意し、確信や、驚きや、勝利や、

うち出された札を集める様子から、その人がその組でもう一度やれるかどうかを判断する。

テーブルの上に札を投げ出す態度から、いかさまの手などはすぐ見破ってしまう。

ひょいと、うっかりしゃべったひと言、どうかして札を落したり、表を見せたりして、あわてて引っこめたり、平気でいたりする態度、または、札を数えることや、それを並べる様子、当惑したり、ためらったり、あせったり、あわてたり――といったすべてのことは、見たところ直覚のような彼の知覚能力に、ちゃんとことの真相を示しているのである。

trepidation は難しい語ですね。狼狽です。当惑したり、ためらったり・・・と感情が４つが並列されています。
分析家、探偵にとっては人の一挙手一投足を見れば真相がわかるということですね。少し恐ろしい気もします。
The first two or three rounds having been played, he is in full possession of the contents of each hand, and thenceforward puts down his cards with as absolute a precision of purpose as if the rest of the party had turned outward the faces of their own.
だから、初めの二、三回がすむと、彼は一人一人の手にある札をすっかり知ってしまい、あとは、まるで他の連中が持札の全部をさらしてでもいるみたいに、絶対的な確信をもって自分の札を切り出すのである。

with as absolute a precision of purpose as ... お気づきでしょうか、as 〜 as構文です。asの後には形容詞がきます。本来a(n) absolute precision 絶対的な確信であるはずが、as absolute a precision... となるわけですね。
